LMS Redesign
Project Overview
Redesign of a learning management system focused on improving usability, navigation clarity, course visibility, and learner progress tracking. The aim was to simplify how students accessed key information and make the interface feel more modern, structured, and easy to use.

The Problem
I worked for an online college using a Moodle-based learning management system. As part of a small team, I worked closely with the director while we explored the possibility of upgrading the platform.
Through speaking with students and observing how they used the system day-to-day, it became clear there were a number of usability issues. The interface was outdated, some functions were redundant, and important information was often hard to find or disconnected from the relevant course content.
At the same time, the overall design felt cluttered and inconsistent, which also made the platform feel less modern and harder to navigate than it needed to be.



The Goal?
Create a more intuitive and engaging LMS experience by improving information architecture, increasing content visibility, establishing a consistent visual identity, and making key student actions easier to find and complete without unnecessary navigation.
Wireframe
I started by gathering inspiration from platforms like Dribbble and existing dashboard-style interfaces, focusing on layouts with clear hierarchy, structured navigation, and a more modern, modular feel.
From there, I sketched out a simple dashboard concept in Canva to explore how the page could be reorganised. The goal wasn’t perfection at this stage, but to map out how each section of the interface could have a clear purpose without overcrowding the screen.



The Solution
I designed each page using Canva to establish the structure and visual direction, then rebuilt the clickable prototype in Figma to demonstrate navigation and flow.
The aim was to create a more focused, fixed-layout experience where key information was always accessible without excessive scrolling or digging through multiple pages.
I removed unnecessary or low-use elements, surfaced more important actions, and reorganised content so each area of the course had a clear and logical place within the system. This made the experience feel more structured, and helped improve clarity for both students and staff reviewing the platform.









Key Takeaways
This project really reinforced how important it is to design around the user journey, not just the individual screens.
There were also practical constraints within the system, so while there was flexibility in what could be built, there was still a balance between ideal design and what was realistic within time and development limits.
What I took away most from this project:
Users care more about finding information quickly than having access to every feature.
Improving information structure often has more impact than adding new functionality.
Small improvements in layout and hierarchy can significantly improve usability and perceived quality.
Consistent navigation reduces cognitive load and helps users feel more confident in the system.
Good product design is often about simplifying and removing unnecessary complexity, not just adding more.
